On Wednesday, 4th March 2026, Taita Taveta University (TTU), in partnership with The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), hosted a vibrant World Engineering Day Walk in Voi under the theme “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalization.” The event brought together engineers, students, government representatives and members of the public in a strong show of unity and professional pride.
World Engineering Day is globally celebrated every 4th March following its proclamation by UNESCO in 2019. The day recognizes the important contribution of engineers and engineering innovations toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Voi, the celebration was marked with energy, engagement and a clear commitment to sustainable development.
The day began with a colorful procession that started from the KeRRA offices in Voi town and proceeded through the town before heading to the TTU Auditorium. Engineers and students marched proudly, carrying banners and engaging members of the public along the way. The procession attracted attention from residents and local businesses, creating an opportunity to educate the community on the role of engineers in infrastructure development, environmental conservation, construction safety standards and the importance of innovation and technology in solving local challenges. The large turnout demonstrated strong professional solidarity and growing public interest in the engineering field.
The event was graced by the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kiptanui Too, who also serves as Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration, Finance and Planning at TTU, alongside Eng. Stephen Okumu, the Taita Taveta Regional Coordinator of IEK. In their remarks, they emphasized that engineering remains central to roads development, water systems, electricity supply, housing, climate resilience and digital transformation. They also highlighted the importance of ethical practice, professionalism, youth empowerment and mentorship, as well as infrastructure development within Taita Taveta County.
A major highlight of the day was the presentation of innovative student projects at the TTU Auditorium. Among the projects showcased were The Ottomans Project and the Development of a Ventilation-on-Demand System for Underground Mines Based on Stope Humidity. The presentations reflected the university’s strong focus on research, practical solutions and digital-driven innovation, demonstrating how young engineers are actively contributing to solving real-world challenges.
Participants included practicing engineers from civil, electrical, mechanical, environmental and ICT disciplines, engineering students from TTU, representatives from the County Government of Taita Taveta, IEK officials and members of the public. The diverse participation strengthened collaboration between academia, industry and government, reinforcing the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable growth.
The World Engineering Day Walk had a significant impact on the local community and the engineering fraternity. It increased public awareness about the everyday contribution of engineers to society and sustainable development. For students, the event served as a powerful source of motivation, inspiring them to pursue excellence and innovation in their studies and future careers. It also created valuable networking opportunities, allowing professionals, students and stakeholders to interact, share ideas and explore partnerships. Most importantly, it strengthened the relationship between engineers and the local community, promoting trust and encouraging future collaboration.
The World Engineering Day Walk in Voi was a successful and meaningful celebration of the engineering profession and its vital role in development. Through public awareness, student engagement and professional collaboration, the event reinforced the message that smart engineering, driven by innovation and digitalization, is fundamental to building resilient communities and achieving sustainable growth. The celebration demonstrated unity among engineers and reaffirmed their commitment to ethical practice, innovation and service to society.
