TAITA TAVETA UNIVERSITY COUNCIL INSPECTS ONGOING CONSTRUCTION SITE FOR STUDENTS HOSTEL UNDER THE NATIONAL AFFORDABLE HOUSING SCHEME

Taita Taveta University (TTU) Human Resource & Development (HRD) Committee of University Council has conducted a site visit to the ongoing construction works for the student’s hostel under the National Affordable Housing Scheme, reaffirming the University’s commitment to expanding student accommodation and enhancing the overall learning environment.

Led by the HRD Chairperson, Mr. Stephen Kilungya, alongside Council members Dr. David Watene and Ms. Emma Kibiro, and accompanied by University Management led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Fred Simiyu Barasa, as well as technical teams, the delegation toured the construction site to assess progress, quality of works, and adherence to project timelines. The visit provided an opportunity for the Council to receive firsthand briefings from project consultants and contractors on key milestones achieved, safety standards in place, and anticipated completion timelines.

The Students Hostel under the National Affordable Housing Scheme is a flagship initiative under the Government of Kenya’s agenda to address the growing demand for affordable, safe, and modern student accommodation in public universities. Once completed, the facility is expected to significantly increase on-campus housing capacity at TTU, improve student welfare, and create a more conducive environment for academic excellence and holistic student development.

During the visit, the Council expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and commended the project team for maintaining quality standards. The Council emphasized the importance of timely completion of the project and strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental requirements.

Speaking during the inspection, the Council reiterated its support for strategic infrastructure development as a key pillar in positioning Taita Taveta University as a competitive and student-centered institution. The Council further noted that the project aligns with the University’s strategic plan and the national goal of expanding access to higher education.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of the project, urging the team to ensure that the hostel becomes a signature and legacy building for the University. He noted that the building will be a game changer for the University, citing its strategic location and high visibility from Mombasa Road.

He assured the Council of TTU management continued oversight, effective coordination with all stakeholders, and support to the team to ensure the project is a success.

The National Student Housing Project is expected to play a transformative role in improving the student experience at Taita Taveta University while contributing to the socio-economic development of the surrounding community through job creation and related economic activities.
